How to read this room
The collection mixes three different kinds of object: photographs, commemorative paintings and modern illustrations, and printed or sculpted memorials. They are not equal evidence, and each entry states which kind it is. Images are shown whole — never cropped to fit a frame — which is why they sit at different sizes on the shelf.

- Photographers, publishers and rights holders for most of these images are not recorded in the copies supplied to this site. Where an item is a modern composition, an illustration or a commemorative painting, the record says so.
- No image on this site has been retouched, colourised, cropped to a subject's face, or altered in aspect ratio. Files have been converted to modern formats and compressed for the web; nothing else has been changed.
